The goals of the program include:

1. Increase understanding and awareness among individuals in the business or private sector regarding public education
2. Demonstrate the private sector’s commitment to ensuring a quality education for every students
3. Form engaging, accountable, sustainable, mutually beneficial partnerships between schools and businesses to ensure a great education for every student

To participate, you must be willing to demonstrate a commitment to partnering with a public school and be willing to engage in a long-term relationship. The time commitment and depth of your partnership is something you can define with your principal to ensure it works within your boundaries.

There are infinite ways to build effective partnerships among schools and businesses, and HandsOn Greater Phoenix will provide you the tools and ideas in a brief development session on Friday, October 21st from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Attendance at the session on Friday, October 21st is critical.

Then, during the week of October 25, you will have the opportunity to shadow your partner principal at his/her school for a period of four to five hours. This will provide you hands-on experience and understanding of a day-in-the-life of a public school principal.

The training (October 21) and day of shadowing (during week of October 25) will launch your relationship and be the first step to your opportunity to engage in and make a positive impact on students in our public schools. The relationship you form with your prospective principal will be one that benefits the schools and you and your business and will be agreed upon and developed hand-in-hand with your principal.

How will I be assigned to a school/principal?
You will be assigned based on your interests and the interests and needs of the school/principal. If you have a specific school to which you would like to be assigned, we will do our best to accommodate.

How will I prepare for my shadowing day at my school?
The training you participate in on October 21st is all you will need to do in preparation.

What will happen on the day I visit my school?
You will have the unique opportunity to share in the day-to-day activities of a public school principal. More than likely, you will visit classrooms, see a public school lunch-room in action, share in discussions with teachers, observe principals interacting with individual students or parents, and possibly engage with children in the classroom by reading to them or even teaching a lesson if that is of interest to you. You will be shadowing the daily life of a public school principal.

Why is my involvement important?
Together, the public and private sectors can have a positive impact on public education. It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to ensure that every child has a great public education. We believe that when business leaders understand the nature of our pubic education system, they can have a positive impact and build sustainable relationships to demonstrate their commitment. We also believe that engagement in public education can have a positive impact on your business. It provides team-building opportunities and can develop a common goal or purpose that bring employees together with a great sense of pride.

What is the Discovery Triangle?

The Discovery Triangle is a multi-city urban development and investment initiative led by the Discovery Triangle Development Corporation (DTDC), a public/private, not-for-profit organization.

As its name implies, the Discovery Triangle is a rich center for knowledge and innovation. Encompassing the urban areas of Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona, the effort capitalizes on existing infrastructure, multi-model transportation options and the hundreds of cutting-edge companies clustered in the area.

As a non-profit development services company, the DTDC encourages, facilitates and enables (re)development opportunities for creating a sustainable future for existing and future businesses and residents. Specifically, the DTDC:

- Facilitates location or expansion within the Discovery Triangle region.

- Negotiates with policy makers for valuable economic growth tools.

- Creates project-specific solutions to financing gaps.

Balanced by nature, arts, culture, professional sports and a variety of affordable housing options, the Discovery Triangle's quality-of-life appeal is a huge attraction to all types of businesses.

The area's inclusion of top-tier higher educational institutions provides the source for a well-educated workforce, while its immediate proximity to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport provides a gateway to the world.
